An event in Popayán, Colombia, was interrupted by a serious accident last Sunday (3), when a monster truck lost control and struck a crowd.

The accident left three people dead and at least 35 injured, according to the Popayán Metropolitan Police. An official from the city of Popayán said one of the victims was a 10-year-old girl, according to the Colombian newspaper El Espectador.

“Following the unfortunate incident at the Monster Trucks exhibition in the Boulevard Rose area, which left more than 35 injured and 3 dead, our police service units, together with the authorities, provided extensive support to the victims and their families,” local police said on their Facebook page.

Colonel Julián Castañeda, commander of the Popayán Police, told the newspaper El Tiempo that the accident was likely caused by a mechanical failure. “It was an isolated accident. There was a mechanical failure and the vehicle left the track,” he told the outlet.

“The number of victims is still not official. The vehicle accelerated, the driver was unable to brake and is in stable condition,” Castañeda also said, adding that an investigation is underway.
